So I think the gun store mislabeled mine and that it is actually an M44. Basically in the gun boards thread, one poster states that the M43's close relative, the M44, was made from captured WZ-29s for use by the Spanish Air Force, and my rifle definitely does have a Spanish Airforce stamp on it.

Also, it does not seem to have that big screw thing that is midway up the stock on the VZ-29 in that photo.ĭigging a little deeper, I found this which I think provides a decent explanation, though I would like to see the guys sources. On the other hand however, my rifle definitely has Spanish stamps and no Polish ones and matching serials, which makes me say its an M43. I noticed on the side for the first time that following where it says "Cal 7.29" on the side there is a little box with just a P in it. In all my research on the M43 I have-never-seen another one with that little sling attachment piece, instead they all have a hole in the stock to run the sling through like most mauser variants. On one hand I kinda believe it as looking that mauser up it-does-have a sight like mine, and much more interestingly, mine has the same god awful little cross bar in the stock to attach the sling to as can be seen in this photo of a VZ-29.
